The X-raid Cross Country Rally Team based in Trebur, Germany and Magna Steyr-Automotive
Group a division of Magna Int. Inc. based in Graz, Austria officially announced
a partnership agreement for the development and build up of the new X-raid BMW
X3CC. The X-raid BMW X3CC will compete in the 2006 Dakar Rally and selected
events in the FIA Cross Country World Cup.
Magna Steyr is a leading global Brand specialising in independent engineering
and a manufacturing for leading international OEMs. Magna Steyr is a partner
to BMW Magna Steyr assembles the BMW X3 SAV. Magna Steyr’s current technological
developments in the automotive industry focus on vehicle weight drive systems,
electrical engineering and electronics as well as safety. Magna Steyr’s
strengths are also strong points of the X-raid team a close cooperation with
Magna Steyr will create a powerful network and a highly developed BMW X3CC.
The X-raid team was founded in 2002 by Sven Quandt and the BMW X5 provided
platform for the first X-raid race car. In the teams first Dakar Rally in 2003,
the team not only achieved the first stage win for a Diesel powered car in the
history of the event but also three second places in so doing the team won the
category for four-wheel powered diesel vehicles. In its 25 years of existence
no diesel-powered four-wheeled vehicle has ever managed to win the Dakar, something
X-raid would like to change in 2006. In 2004 X-raid driver Khalifa Al Mutaiwei
and navigator Alain Guehennec won the FIA Cross Country World Cup driving the
Diesel powered BMW X5.
X-raid, Magna Steyr and BMW Steyr will jointly design and develop the new BMW
X3CC for the ultra tough Cross Country Rallies. Plans are afoot to build three
X-raid BMW X3CC race cars. The first X-raid BMW X3CC is under construction at
Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. While Magna Steyr will handle the component simulation
and construction of the chassis, BMW Steyr will supply the 3 Litre Bi-Turbo Diesel
engines that are already well know to the Rally Raid scene with a few tweaks of
course.

"Our co-operation with MAGNA STEYR increases the speed, tenacity and flexibility
for the X-raid team and I am looking forward to a fruitful partnership",

BMW Steyr is great for us and I think everybody will benefit from the project.”
