BMW 3 Series: New engines for the 3 Series Saloon.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 330d develops maximum output of 170
kW/231 hp and equally impressive torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft. And despite its dynamic
performance, with acceleration to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 250
km/h or 155 mph, the 330d Saloon requires just 6.5 ltr/100km (equal to 43.5 mpg
Imp) in the composite EU cycle.
Developing maximum output of 90 kW/122 hp and peak torque of 280 Nm/206 lb-ft,
the new 318d Saloon rounds off BMW’s diesel range at the lower end. Through
its four-cylinder power unit, the 318d is most certainly an economical athlete:
With fuel consumption of just 5.6 ltr/100 km or 50.4 mpg Imp in the composite
EU cycle, the car’s performance is quite remarkable, acceleration to 100
km/h coming in 10.6 seconds, from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear in 9.3 seconds,
and with top speed of 206 km/h or 152 mph.
The entry-level four-cylinder in the BMW 318i Saloon is based on BMW’s 2.0-litre
straight-four petrol engine. Maximum output of 95 kW/129 hp, together with peak
torque of 180 Nm/133 lb-ft, are quite sufficient for acceleration to 100 km/h
in 10.0 sec, acceleration from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear in just 10.9 sec,
and a top speed of 208 km/h or 130 mph. Fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle,
finally, is just 7.3 ltr/100 km, equal to 38.7 mpg Imp.
Like the engines in all BMWs already in the market, the new power units naturally
comply in full with the strict EU4 emission standard.
BMW xDrive now also in the 3 Series.
BMW’s six-cylinder 3 Series Saloon and Touring models are now also available
with the innovative xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The great advantage of xDrive
is that it spreads out drive power in fractions of a second variably and depending
on requirements between the two axles, thus giving the 3 Series excellent all-wheel-drive
dynamics of the highest standard.
Extra safety when towing a trailer.
In the 3 Series equipped with a trailer towing bracket, the latest generation
of BMW’s DSC Dynamic Stability Control complete with Trailer Stability Management
offers additional safety on the road. This unique system recognises any threat
of the car and trailer swaying and automatically takes appropriate counter-measures.
DSC with its stabilising intervention in the brakes does not cut in until discreet
intervention by Trailer Stability Management is no longer sufficient to avoid
a potentially dangerous situation.
