BMW OF NORTH AMERICA NAMES BILL AUBERLEN AND JOEY HAND TO DRIVE FOR BMW RAHAL LETTERMAN RACING TEAM IN THE AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES
BMW of North America, LLC has named Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand as the first two drivers of the new M3s for BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team in the 2009 American Le Mans Series. In choosing Auberlen and Hand, BMW of North America has picked two of the most successful BMW drivers in the world and two of the most familiar names to M3 racing fans here in North America.
Auberlen, 40, of Redondo Beach, CA first drove for BMW of North America in 1996 when he joined the previous M3 racing program, then in its second year of competition. Auberlen would go on to become the team's most successful driver, winning driver titles in both 1997 and 2004. When he takes the green flag at Sebring International Raceway for the 57th annual 12 Hours of Sebring on March 21, Auberlen will have the distinction of having raced every generation of BMW M3 campaigned by BMW of North America.

Hand, 29, of Sacramento, CA joined the previous M3 racing program in 2004 and raced through the 2006 season. Coming from a background in open wheel racing, Hand quickly adapted to the M3 and endurance racing. He drove to five wins and 13 podium finishes for BMW of North America in three seasons, many of those races partnered with Auberlen.
"BMW of North America is very pleased to have Bill and Joey on the team," said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager. "Their experience with setup, GT racing and their raw speed will support the competitiveness of BMW's GT2 campaign in the ALMS. I have known both of them for many years, and besides being fast, they're both a lot of fun to work with. I am looking forward to seeing them pedal our newest BMW M3 racer."
"My emotions are really high. I feel like I am going back home to my family. To be a part of racing at the level that BMW brings is a dream for any driver," said Bill Auberlen. "I am really looking forward to being teamed up again with Joey. It'll be exciting to be on a team headed by a legend and racing icon like Bobby Rahal. I am really looking forward to 2009."
"I'm very excited to be back in the BMW family and to be driving a BMW M3 again. I built quite a fan base within the BMW community and I can't wait to put on a show for them again," added Joey Hand. "I am looking forward to working with a top-notch team such as Rahal Letterman Racing. Bobby helped me earlier in my career so we have a good relationship. I can't wait to get started!"
Since the program's announcement in February 2008, the ALMS BMW M3 has been developed and tested by BMW Motorsport in Europe. This month begins the official handoff to BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team with two more tests in the US.

2008 Grand-Am KONI Challenge
|
|
Monday October 06, 2008 |

ALTON, Va. – Automatic Racing ended the KONI Challenge season in dramatic style during Sunday’s six-hour Grand Sport class race at Virginia International Raceway. Charlie Putman and Charles Espenlaub overcame a one-lap deficit to finish eighth in the No. 91 Automatic Racing BMW M3, while Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal saw their championship hopes disappear in the final hour of the race.
Thornton and Segal, along with Terry Borcheller, put in a monumental effort in the No. 09 Automatic Racing BMW M3. Thornton and Segal hoped to earn their second consecutive championship, but fuel pickup problems developed in only the second hour of the race. The problem required refueling every half an hour.
During a caution in the third hour, while Thornton was behind the wheel, the Automatic crew got to work on the fuel problem. They were able to improve the fuel pressure, but by then the No. 09 was a lap down in 17th.
Thornton, Segal and Borcheller each took a stint in the car, and by the end of the fifth hour the team had made up their lap and Borcheller sat in an impressive eighth overall. The pickup problem returned, though, and Borcheller had to pull off track at turn three to take a shortcut back to the pits. A full tank was all that kept the fuel pressure in check, and he returned to the track a lap down once again. At the checkered flag, the No. 09 M3, sponsored by Imported Car Store, Rogue Engineering, LandAir and Engine Music Studios, was 11th.
The finish gave Thornton and Segal third in the Grand Sport driver championship, while the title went to Joe Foster and Scott Maxwell in the No. 55 Hyper Sport Mustang. “Congratulations to Joe and Scott,” commented Thornton. “You never know how things will turn out – we lost our chance for a championship in the last minutes of the last race. We all fight for this moment. We had our problems, but overall we had a great season.” Referring to Monday night’s KONI Challenge banquet in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina, Thornton added, “Viva Greensboro!”
“Congratulations to the entire Hyper Sport team,” added Segal. “They did a fantastic job, and they really deserve this. Their Mustang was really strong and our little M3 just didn’t have anything for them. Our whole team worked unbelievably hard all weekend. Our championship last year and our third place points finish this year is all because of their efforts.”
“Every single time we advanced, we’d get pushed back down. In my last stint, we were on the lead lap and in place to race for the win, and the fuel pressure started to drop again,” said Borcheller. “My lap times kept slowing, so I was still trying to race but also trying to stay out of the way.”
Meanwhile, Putman and Espenlaub faced their own share of setbacks in the No. 91 Automatic M3. Espenlaub started the race and was up to 11th, pitting late in the second hour to give the car to Putman. At the halfway mark though, Putman was hit by a competitor on a restart, and he had to pit twice so the team could change a tire and repair damage to the left rear bumper.
Putman and Espenlaub battled back to regain the lap they lost as a result of their pit stops, and a late-race caution caught them up to the lead-lap field. The race restarted with only two laps before the checkered flag, and Espenlaub darted past several other cars to claim eighth.

ALTON, Va. – Rob Finlay and Steve Cameron will have a new co-driver this weekend at Virginia International Raceway, where NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Michael McDowell is joining the pair in the No. 99 Automatic Racing Mobile-Shop.com BMW M3.
Sunday's KONI Challenge finale is six hours long, so most teams are adding a third driver to the roster, and McDowell is the perfect choice to round out the lineup in the No. 99 M3. After honing his skills in sports car racing, McDowell moved up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and now drives the No. 00 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing. McDowell's rise through the ranks has been fostered by the Finlay Motorsports Driver Development Program, which Finlay initiated to help young talents like McDowell take advantage of the opportunities available in motorsports.
McDowell wasted no time getting used to the No. 99 Automatic Racing Mobile-Shop.com M3 during Friday's practice session. He posted the fifth-quickest time in the third practice of the day, with a quick lap of 2:05.500. It was also the fastest time for Automatic Racing in that session.
The No. 09 Automatic Racing BMW M3 of Jep Thornton, Jeff Segal and Terry Borcheller, who is joining the championship contenders for the endurance race, claimed the fastest time for the team with a 2:04.693 in the second practice session. Thornton and Segal hope to clinch their second KONI Challenge Grand Sport championship this weekend.
The other Automatic Racing entries include the No. 91 M3 of Charlie Putman and Charles Espenlaub, and the No. 90 M3 of Derek Whitis and Tom Long. Keep up with the team and their championship online this weekend at www.AutomaticRacing.com.
Automatic Racing is sponsored by Imported Car Store, Rogue Engineering, LandAir, and Engine Music Studios.

"It has certainly been a season of ups and downs and coming into Road Atlanta, I feel like we are hitting on all cylinders both as a team and behind the wheel," said BimmerWorld's owner/driver James Clay about the team's season to date. "We just got back from testing and I feel good about our upcoming race weekend."
2008 has been a mixed bag of results for the team from Dublin, Virginia. A win in August at Elkhart Lake by James Clay has certainly added momentum to help BimmerWorld close out the season on a high note. The team has made a huge leap forward in competitiveness, and Clay wants to end the year in style. "I had higher expectations than having our three drivers in the top 10 in points coming into this year; we're hungry for a championship, but winning two of the last three races will go a long way as a consolation prize."
With the cars carrying added support from sponsor GearWrench for the Road Atlanta finale, Clay's says his BMW E90 team is gaining strength at just the right time. "I was excited to work with them through the full season, and the increase in their support is certainly welcome. It is a valuable partnership to the team and one that not only helps the racing effort but helps the guys on the team who are able to have boxes full of GearWrench tools to make their jobs easier."
For Seth Thomas, driver of the #38 BimmerWorld/GearWrench BMW, the growth of GearWrench's participation is a sign of bigger and better things to come. "I think GearWrench stepping up their support of BimmerWorld is just perfect - it’s a great way to end a great year. They have helped the BimmerWorld crew make our cars front runners and our E90's always show up at the track ready to go because of them."

2008 Grand-Am KONI Challenge

ALTON, Va. – There’s nothing like a little drama at the end of the race season. Automatic Racing co-drivers Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal clinched their first KONI Challenge championship last year at Virginia International Raceway, and they’re hoping for a repeat at this weekend’s season finale.
Thornton and Segal, who drive the No. 09 Automatic Racing Imported Car Store/Rogue Engineering/LandAir/Engine Music Studios BMW M3, were well on their way to winning their second consecutive championship this year. They posted a top-five finish in the first eight rounds of the season, giving them a healthy points lead, but a crash at New Jersey dropped them to sixth in the points.
Never ones to give up easily, Thornton and Segal earned valuable points two weeks ago at Miller Motorsports Park. The KONI Challenge season wraps up this weekend at VIR with a six-hour endurance race, and six drivers are all in close contention for the driver championship in the Grand Sport class.
Thornton is optimistic about this weekend’s race. “The good news is that the BMWs perform better than the Mustangs, so if we can keep the car running all six hours we should be in good shape,” he says. “It’s going to be a great weekend no matter what. I like all four of these guys we’re up against. Whoever wins it, I’ll be happy for them.”
“The tough thing about this weekend is the length of the race,” added Segal. “I’m looking forward to it, but we’ve got a ton of work to do if we’re going to win the championship. We always have a good car at VIR, though.”
VIR is the home track for Automatic Racing’s Rob Finlay. He and co-driver Steve Cameron will have a crowd of friends and family cheering them on as they aim for the win in the No. 99 Mobile-Shop.com BMW M3.
Charlie Putman and Charles Espenlaub will share the No. 91 Automatic Racing BMW M3, and they already have plenty of laps around the 3.27-mile VIR circuit. “We tested at VIR earlier this year, and we ran there with World Challenge,” said Putman. “We’ve got to fly in at the last minute because we’re at Road Atlanta this weekend, too. We’ll only get to do one practice before the race, but we feel good about it because we’ve run there recently and the car has been coming off the trailer in great shape.”
Automatic Racing will have a fourth BMW M3 in the race this weekend: the No. 90 will be piloted by Derek Whitis and Tom Long. The ST-class regulars raced an M3 in the GS class at Barber Motorsports Park, where they put in a strong run. Long has plenty of laps in an Automatic BMW after a very successful season with the team last year, and Whitis is a longtime friend of the team.
The six-hour KONI Challenge Grand Sport finale begins at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 5. Keep up with Automatic Racing’s season finale and busy off-season plans online at www.AutomaticRacing.com.

2008 Grand-Am KONI Challenge

TOOELE, Utah – The KONI Challenge race at Miller Motorsports Park had some challenges and disappointment for Automatic Racing, but Sunday’s race was a chance to show off how much talent is on the team.
Charlie Putman and Charles Espenlaub led the charge this weekend in the No. 91 Automatic Racing BMW M3. Putman qualified a solid seventh, the quickest of the Automatic drivers. He and Espenlaub kept the car near the front during the race, and with ten minutes remaining Espenlaub was in second place. The duo’s hopes for a podium finish were dashed when contact from another car took the No. 91 M3 out of the race with the checkered flag just minutes away.
“The late-race yellow closed up the field, and the worst happened,” said Putman. “Our car was super, and we knew we had a shot at doing well. It was really a good weekend; those racing things just happen. We have to judge the weekend by our performance, not by our results, and the performance was great this weekend, especially by the crew.”
Championship defenders Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal had better luck in the No. 09 Imported Car Store/Rogue Engineering/LandAir/Engine Music Studios BMW M3. Thornton qualified 12th but quickly moved into the top 10 during the opening laps of the race, and after Segal took over he put down fast laps to cross the finish line in eighth.
The race at Miller was far better than the previous round at New Jersey, where Thornton and Segal slipped out of the championship lead after a crash. The other championship challengers finished well at Miller, also, and now the No. 09 drivers are in a tight battle for the title with four other drivers.
“In my stint at the beginning we were running almost identical to how the race ended,” said Thornton. “All of us in contention for the championship finished near each other, so the points are even closer heading into our last race. This is the best championship race since 2004.”
“I’m disappointed with the finish, and this is really going to make things interesting at the season finale in two weeks,” said Segal, who headed for Las Vegas after the race in search of some better luck.
Rob Finlay had a new co-driver in the No. 99 Mobile-Shop.com BMW M3. Steve Cameron was under the weather this weekend, so his nephew Dane Cameron stepped in as a substitute. It marked the young talent’s KONI Challenge debut, and he proved that racing runs in the family by turning competitive times despite having never driven the car before. Sadly, the team’s day ended early because of mechanical woes.
“Dane had never driven the car and he did a great job,” said Finlay, adding that Cameron is a part of the Finlay Motorsports Driver Development Program. “He put in some really fast laps and we got to showcase his performance. We had rotten luck again, and are hoping for better results at VIR.”
The season finale will be a six-hour enduro at Virginia International Raceway on Saturday, October 4, where Thornton and Segal hope to give Automatic Racing another championship. Keep up with the team online at www.AutomaticRacing.com.

Team RAC drivers Colin Turkington and Stephen Jelley were today joined by a host of celebrities including Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher, current Miss England Laura Coleman, former Coronation Street actress Lucy Evans and the darts duo of Colin Lloyd and Mervyn King at Rockingham Motor Speedway for a Track Day hosted in aid of Everyman.
The celebrities competed head to head in a variety of motoring tests including high speed single seater racing, rally driving, 4x4, karting, wet grip and even a pit-stop challenge.
Turkington and Jelley presented a cheque of £15,000 to Melissa Morley, representing Everyman at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Colin Turkington said: “I was delighted to be involved in the RAC Everyman Track Day. Everyman is a fantastic charity and we are keen to do as much as we can to raise the profile of such charities. The celebrities who attended had a superb day, and hopefully I passed on a few tips and words of advice to help them out!”
Kelvin Fletcher said: “It was a very exciting day and all for a wonderful cause which is so close to my heart due to my role as an ambassador for Everyman. Having experts on hand in Team RAC made it a great experience for everyone taking part.
Kerry Gazzard, RAC Sponsorship and PR Consultant: “The RAC Everyman Track Day was a wonderful day for all involved. We felt it only right that as sponsors of Team RAC we use our motorsport expertise to assist a very worthy cause this season.
“I’d like to thank Rockingham for all their assistance in the event, the celebrities for their support and Everyman, who I hope thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

2008 British Touring Car Championship

Team RAC will be celebrating today after doing the double at the final meeting of the HIQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch yesterday (Sunday 21 September). Team RAC again won the Independent Teams Trophy and Colin Turkington retained the Independent Drivers Championship.
Despite entering the weekend 22 points ahead of Mat Jackson, winning the Independents was by no means going to be an easy task for Turkington. Jackson won the first two races of the day making it extremely tough for the Northern Irishman. However a points tally of
323 secured Turkington the Independent Drivers Championship.
Round 28
Colin Turkington moved a step towards securing the Independents Drivers Championship but a win for Jackson meant the title would go to the wire.
In beautiful sunshine, in front of another bumper crowd at Brands Hatch, Stephen Jelley began the first race of the day in pole position after a great performance in qualifying. Jelley began positively but was nudged by Mat Jackson at the end of the opening lap dropping him down to second place.
Early in the second lap the safety car was deployed and soon after the race resumed, a missed shift created a gearbox problem forcing Jelley to retire.
26 year-old Turkington began the race from sixth on the grid. After biding his time for the early part of the race, a great move from Turkington on lap 15 saw him pass Shedden to fifth. Turkington began to put pressure on former team-mate Rob Collard and on lap 23 he was able to capitalise on an error from Turner to move up fourth, where he eventually finished the race.
Round 29
With a revised set up on the car, Colin Turkington drove well to secure a superb spot on the podium while Jelley battled bravely from the back.
Starting from fourth on the grid Turkington suffered a sluggish start and dropped to sixth place. The positions remained static until lap 10 when Plato slowed, promoting Turkington to fifth.
Turkington then patiently waited behind Neal, ready to capitalise on any move made by the former BTCC champion. On lap 15 his opportunity came as Neal was pushing Kane eventually passed him on the start- finish line. Turkington used the move to his advantage and pushed through to fourth.
The same move was to be repeated when Neal and Turkington picked off Collard on lap 19. Turkington’s strategy eventually secured him a place on the podium.
Stephen Jelley suffered some bad luck in the first race and was determined to battle his way up the grid from 21st place. A superb start saw him move up to 15th and a strong performance from the Leicester-born driver saw him steadily move up the field throughout the race. He eventually finished just outside the points in 12th place.
Round 30
Colin Turkington retained his title as Independent Champion after a tense and incident-packed race.
Turkington and Jelley started in 6th and 12th places respectively.
Early in the race the safety car was deployed after John George was involved in a terrifying high-speed roll, from which he fortunately escaped unharmed. On the restart Jelley and Turkington drove sensibly and stayed out of trouble – keeping to the Team RAC strategy.
The race ended behind the safety car after Martyn Bell’s car blew an engine, coating the circuit in oil, causing a number of drivers, including Stephen Jelley, to slip off into the gravel.
Turkington finished in 5th place enough to retain his Independents title.
Colin Turkington commented: “I’m delighted to have retained my title as Independents Champion and to have helped Team RAC win the Independent Teams Trophy again. It has been a fantastic season and I am really pleased with my overall performance.
“Team RAC have given me a great car this year and for that I am extremely grateful. It will be good to have a few weekends off now the season has ended but I’ll be itching to get back in the car and am already excited about the prospect of 2009.”
Commenting on his first BTCC season Stephen Jelley said: “It has been a challenging but fun season for me. At the start I didn’t really have the pace but I have improved steadily throughout the year, which culminated in starting on pole today.
“Next season I am looking forward to starting further up the grid and returning to the circuits for a second time.”
WSR Team Principal Dick Bennetts said: “It’s been a very competitive
season and the Independents Trophy was hard earned. With 14 cars
qualifying within half a second of each other, it was great to see Stephen qualify on pole.
We had a strategy today which was to retain both Independents titles. Colin kept cool, drove with his head, and thoroughly deserved the final result after a tough but rewarding season.”
Kerry Gazzard, RAC Sponsorship and PR Consultant: “What a fantastic result for Team RAC. The team have all worked incredibly hard this year so it’s great to see them reap the rewards.
It has been another superb day of racing for the fans, who again turned out in their droves. I’m sure I can speak for the whole team when I express my thanks to the Team RAC fans for their support throughout the year.”
The overall Drivers Championship was won by Fabrizio Giovanardi.

2008 British Touring Car Championship

BMW Dealer Team UK driver Mat Jackson brought his 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car campaign to a celebratory end today as he claimed two consecutive victories and finished in fourth place in the final race of the year. As a result of his superb results the Accident Exchange-backed driver finished second in both the overall Championship standings and the Independents’ Trophy.
In race one Jackson had the best possible start to the day. Starting from second on the grid he quickly tucked in behind pole sitter Stephen Jelley on the run to the first turn. Determined as ever Jackson passed his fellow BMW driver to claim the lead at the end of the opening lap. Demonstrating the superb handling of the BMW320si Jackson was soon in a race of his own; opening up a five second advantage by lap 17. Despite the changing order of the ensuing pack Jackson was never closely challenged for the lead and the 27-year-old returned home victorious with a valuable 16 points in the bag, which ultimately placed him in third place in the Championship standings.
For race two Jackson started from pole and quickly converted it into a flawless drive netting him his fifth victory of the 2008 BTCC season. Jackson, who also set the fastest lap of the race on lap two, claimed 17 points. The retirement of SEAT driver Jason Plato on lap 11 put Jackson within firm reach of claiming the 2008 runners’-up position with only five points separating them.
As Jackson started the final fixture of the year from eighth on the grid he had everything to play for as he went in search of the runner-up positions. By the end of the first lap Mat was running in sixth place but the safety car was soon deployed for eight laps. Once the race recommenced, on lap ten, Jackson looked to pass Rob Collard, with Plato running in 13th Mat need a fifth place finish to take the runner-up spoils. On lap 23 Mat moved up to fifth and then as drivers went wide at Paddock Hill he claimed another position, Jackson ultimately finished in fourth place, rounding off the team’s most successful point-scoring weekend with a second place in the overall Championship standings. Jackson also finished runner-up in the Independents Trophy behind his season-long rival Colin Turkington.
Jackson commented: “What a fantastic result to finish the season off with. We came here with the aim to take third in the overall Championship; we thought that was a realistic result, we didn’t actually think about finishing second, so as you can imagine we are all chuffed to bits. The team has worked really hard all year and done a fantastic job, which has paid off. We have also had great support from our sponsors Accident Exchange and I would like to thank them all. It has been a good season, certainly challenging at times but moments like this it all worthwhile. It would have been nice to get the Independents’ trophy but we were just 11 points shy at the end of the day.”

BMW Dealer Team UK’s Mat Jackson put in a sterling performance at Brands Hatch circuit today as he qualified his Accident Exchange-backed BMW in second place for the final round of the series.
Jackson was understandably delighted with the result at the 1.19-mile Indy track as he starts four places clear of BMW rival Colin Turkington who he is hoping to steal the Independents’ Trophy from and also claim third place in the overall Championship standings. Jackson looked set to take pole but late-charging Independent driver Stephen Jelly edged him out of the top slot by a mere six hundredths of a second with only six minutes of the 30-minute session remaining.
Jackson commented, “Just the job, I’ll settle for second place, there is a lot to play for tomorrow. Obviously it would be good to have claimed another pole as we did in the opening round earlier in the year but second suits me fine.”
Team Principal Tony Jackson commented, “Mat did a good job out there, we knew the car was strong around here and we are just hoping we can carry the strong form into tomorrow and claim the necessary points.”
Race one for the British Touring Car Championship is at 11.45 tomorrow with race two and three at 14.25 and 16.35 respectively.
