Well i would like to point out on some failures regarding on BMW.
In autumn 1992 the M60 engine was born . It is a 8 cillindres 3,0 litres engine with 218 HP. At first it was made of preassure cast nikasil which has been proven week in its material. The oil leaked from every pore that was not sealed.
The engine overheated fast and the lubrication was not working as it should.
so they moved fast to cast alloy which was like the engine was reborn.
All in all the alloy engine has proven verry agile and the fuel consuption was even lower then on the established 3,5 inline 6 cilindres with 211 HP.
The engine has only one major problem. The bolts on the oilpump unscrew themselfs easylly due to the negativ vibrations. So it is usefull to tighten the bolts every time you change the oil. However it is not recomendet that you put eny kind of tightening paste on the bolts. First it could damage the oil pump due to the fact that the paste would run out some time and it will get thru the filter into the pump hoses and than it is a major problem for the pump to supply enough lubricant to the engine.
Also only few pastes are temperature resistant. Otherwise there are no problems with the engine.
The ZF 5 HP 18 Automatic gearbox.
With the new engine also came out this gearbox. It has 5 gears and 3 programs to select how you want to drive. Economic, sport or manuall shifting which is usefull when you drive downhill.
The main problem with this gearbox was that it was one of the first boxes that they filled with the "lifetime oil" in that time iz was the Dexron 2 oil. Soon they discovered that the oil is not as good as they have expected. The gearboxes broke down due to overheating and lack of lubrication.
Later on the box was filled with" SEMI lifetime" Dexron 3
But the mechanics allways treated the gearbox as it was on the lifetime fill.
So the gearbox was usually worned out at 250 000 km.
logical thing. If you dont change oil and the filter in the box than it will and it must brake down on you. So the semifilling stands for "filling for 100 000 km.
After you made that mileage the oil and the filter has to be changed.
Otherwise the engine and the box are harmonising together verry well.
On the next episode we will take the lights under inspection

Tnx that you took the time to read this one
