I take delivery of a nice 2005 525d M Sport touring tomorrow (my first BMW) and want to know if the standard head unit will play a CD of MP3s? If it can, does it recognise named folders containg track details (i.e. can I make a CD with folders of Groups or Artists with Named songs inside the folder?) I suppose I want the folder to work like an ipod... thanks for your help!

Regards,
Ron (aka McPie form Scotland)

Hi Ron,
I've been searching around for you, because I too didn't know an answer to this question.
It looks like your business radio with cd-player will not play mp3 files, if you have a professional radio it would play them.
I have read some contradictory information, but I don't think it will play them.

Here is the source I got it from:

Good luck, and let us know if your new car is satisfactory!

Thanks for the reply Ilir, I have just had a phone call from the Dealers Workshop Manager and he says it can be done with a full software update of the car's systems. He did say it was a long process as all the car's systems have to be updated at the same time, door handles, air con, lights - the works!! And he was honest enough to say it rarely works the first time round as the software often crashes! (help!) All in all he says the process will take either three hours or a full day... This scenario seems to be as a result of the "iDrive, i Get distracted, i Crash" system controlling everything to do with the car...

If I can convince the salesman to do have the work done free I?ll go for it, otherwise I?ll take it to an independent for iPod conversion I think!

Regards,

Ron

Hey Ron,

Sounds utterly ridiculous that this process has to be so time consuming.
Maybe you could get yourself the professional radio for the same money?

Good luck and have fun!

well at least if you can get the ipod installed, you'll be able to load as many songs as you want

i think even now for the ipod you can have remote controls, instead of having to turn the wheel all the time to skip track
