Sounds like the clutch is shot
If the engine can rev without the car going faster then the clutch is definitely slipping. This applies to a manual tranny or an automatic(it just has more clutches in it).

It should also be noted that the 318i with automatic is one of the most anemic E30s built. If one is not familiar with the car, it's possible that there is nothing really wrong with it...other than being under powered for the otto box
But if the engine revs really high without the car accelerating much it is definitely a sign of something wrong in the tranny. The least expensive attempt to fix this is a complete fluid flush with new gaskets and filter; BMW sells it as a kit. Do the flush and drive the car for 3 or 4 weeks...if there is no improvement then you know it's going to be expensive. If it improves, then you've got many more trouble free miles ahead

Hey,
Yea you could be right about nothing being wrong...im thinking that it might be the torque converter. Just a guess
. I know since it does not have overdrive and it is a 3-speed auto that the revs would be higher...but its too high (60mph @ 3700rpm) with not much response (acceleration) *sigh* looks like im gonna convert to manual

Greetings,
I was jus curious...what tranny would be compatible with a 84' 318i? (other than another 84' 318i) Like a man/trans from 325i, or man/trans from 325e, or man/trans from 525i. Tried researching but all i got was Getrag 240, 246 (guessing name of tranny) but no description of compatability. Yea i need some major help

Ok, the getrag 240 is the gearbox for the 4-cyl e30s, the getrag 260 is the 6-cyl version.
I don't know a lot about it, but I think this will be the only one that will fit (maybe there are aftermarket conversions available).
Also on this site:
http://www.theeurodepot.com/specials.html
you can find complete conversion kits (scroll down a little).
As you can see, you're not only changing the tranny, but also the pedals, driveshaft, etc.

Howdy,
I finally got a 5spd tranny
!! I had some concerns about some of the parts not included. Would the transmission cross member from the auto tranny mount up to the manual tranny? Also would i need to buy another drive shaft or would the one i have right now mount up properly? I already know about the master/slave cylinders and about the clutch assembly (including pedals). I heard i might need a new ECU but it doesnt make sense why. Anything else that i may have over looked? (i researched quite a bit) Thanks a lot for your help!

hmm not too familiar with the 318, but best bet is just to try it out and see if everything lines up
as for the tranny just checking part numbers now,
hmm actually what year is the 325 manual tranny from?
but as for the crossmember its a direct fit
both models are using the same p/n 23711176574
as for the driveshafts
hmm hard to say, part numbers don't match, i need to get some more info from you
as for installing the tranny, it should bolt directly
let us know how its going
good luck

. Im also thinkin about dropping in a 2.0L from a 320i. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Also im gonna document my progress and post pics before/after soon. Check out my album

Cool that you uploaded pics to the album
... Like your 325i, your 318i looks like it needs some work
Have to say that I haven't heard of an M10s engine though, maybe it's the M10/M64 engine from the older 320i (e21)?
The newer 320i's have M20 engines...

Yo,
I jus want everybody to know that...it is possible to put a volvo radiator inside a e30
. "Why did you do that" you may be askin yourself...the answer is that i forgot to bolt down the radiator i had ... the bolt came loose ... the radiator came of .... and you can guess the rest. Well i needed a radiator fast and the junkyard didnt have any good ones (318i or 325i). So i saw a volvo that had a radiator like the one in a 325i. and it fits and works
!!! (ill upload pics)
Quick question...i would like to put an alternator in that has a higher output. What would be good and wont damage the electrical system. (i want like 120a or more if possible)
Thanks

haha cool, glad to hear that it fits
what do you need a bigger alternator for?
if its for a sound system then you shouldn't worry about it too much, i was running 2x 12 jl 12w4 rf x5 amp, rf 900 amp for the speakers, ps2, in dash tv, never had any electrical problems with the car, always had enough juice to run in -40c weather

The reason being, I think my alternator is goin out (output not as high). I dont know if its electrical or not but when ever i turn on my blower the temp and fuel gauge goes up. If i turn on anything the guages would move to a higher position givin me a false reading. Dont know why. So i would like to put something a lil better in hopefully.
